Somewhat long but very interesting behind the scenes article from someone who knows the dirty secrets.

"Illegal workers will work for less money because, being undocumented, they rarely pay employment taxes or any related insurance costs. Contractors exploit the illegals’ fear of immigration officials (La Migra), and the resultant silence stemming from that fear, for the purpose of fattening their own wallets. Too bad the prices these builders charge for the goods they provide don’t reflect their reduced production costs. Although reduced quality, is often the result."

Amen. In El Paso it is common for people to knock on your door to offer various handyman services for cash. I always ask them if they are legal to work in the United States. When they yes, I ask them if they would be willing to fill out a form verifying their tax status so that I can issue a 1099. That weeds them out right away.

Are you kidding me?

If I was working as a handyman, as an American citizen I would not want to mess with tax forms either. And if I had some lady asking me to fill out tax forms I would just walk away too.

It is so sad that many American businesses put their wallets before their own country's citizenship (and citizens). Beyond disappointing.

No I am not kidding. If you want to work on my property you will pay taxes just like I do.

These businesses that hire illegals are probably not paying for things like workman's comp and insurance. I saw somewhere where illegal immigrants are not the only problem. They are bringing in foreign workers at the rate of 150,000 a month while Americans are still losing jobs. Maybe the truth is the Americans are being replaced.

The truth is that American small businessmen(women) are hiring illegals to do work while telling you that their profit margin is only a certain percentage.

Doesn't this thread really belong over in the high-rent district of the immigration subforum?

But I did enjoy this guy Kiefer suggesting that unscrupulous employers are exploiting nonexistent laws. That's a good trick...I wonder how much practice it takes to master that one...
