A great country with good and bad people. It isn't healthy to be overly aggressive, and too full of ourselves. Uncle Sam pokes his big nose into too many places, and complains when it gets shot off. We cannot try to make the world in our image. Especially by force, under the guise of something deceptive. We can't fool people who have been around far longer, and have been through hell much worse than ours. The US is a puppy dog with a lot to learn.

According to the Center for Immigration studies, about 40 million people, or 1 in 8 in the US, are immigrants. Since they're not all running home I'm guessing the ol' USA ain't so bad.

It doesn't matter for other nations to love us...
Any quality nation or individual, any where in the world, likes us...

What matters though is for our enemies to fear us...
After the liberation of Iraq,Khaddafi sh*tted his ...burkha,( or whatever) & said that he will...cooperate with USA against terrorism...

Is Ahmadinezand now afraid of USA ?
France & Germany created an antiamer axis in NATO & acted like agents of Russia, blocking the entry of Ukraine & Georgia.

Nobody is afraid of us today...

People, Please do not be offended about the points that were mentioned about this country. Whether all or some of it is true is rather irrevelant, but realize none us can reflute the history of this country towards it's own people starting with the Native Americans and continuing to the new immigrants. If we mistreat our own how hard is it imagine how the "others" meaning those who the media chooses to ignore (Somalia). As an american that has served his country for 20 years like my father and now my son, I find that the very thing that made this country great has begun to fall by the wayside...the common people. Most of the irrogance and greed that is percieved by other countries are the things that in reality a small part of American culture. Yes we are for the most part overweight, unhealthy, ignorant of the outside world, we have (in some cases) greedy and uncaring leaders, politicans who are in bed with major harmful corperations, racial issues (even with a black president) and whole host of other social ills but we are still Americans. We work hard and we play hard and don't think of the consequences of how it affects anyone else. Do you want to know why the rest of the world embraced Obama? Because after 8 years of ignorant swagger (american cowboy attitude) the world was waiting for an intelligent and compassionate represenative of this fine country to emerge. No we are not perfect but we can be a real beacon of how a multitude of various cultures can live and prosper in a great society. Unfortunately there are people for whatever reason are still being manipulated by polical parties which in turn are tools of big business to undermine the hope of rightening this country after 8 years of despair (yes I said despair) and the systematic destruction of the middle class. Yes the OP pointed out PAST flaws but that can change if we all just channeled our collective energies to thinking on our own and not be "played" by the non-american owner of Faux News into dividing this great country. For those of you who readily attack our present president think about why. The average american can give a rats azz about the deficeit b/c after 8 years of making companies like blackwater and haliburton richer how can you really say with a straight face that the spending done now on the common people will not benefit us in the end? I guess that all that I'm saying is give him and this country a chance. One man cannot fix or is he responsible for the mistakes that the past 43 presidents made. Ok clue, you have made your point about the "evils" of american politics because that is what it is, and not the people themselves that caused the past astrocities. I also hate to bring this up but the destruction of the twin towers was terrible but has it ever occurred to anyone why it happened in the first place? The average american has no ideal that we were sending cruise missles into other countries and missing badly and destroying schools, hospitals and places of worship. I guess they said enough was enough and the ant bit the dragon. I'm not saying that it was right, but it got the peoples attention on worldwide events.

I didn't say we took more casualties, I said we have bled more than any other country while helping other countries. Did France bleed while trying to help some other country. No. Did Russia? No. They only fought for themselves because they were attacked. We bled while helping others to regain their freedom. You missed the whole point.

And the rest are on the road due to Thanksgiving. Yes, we are so happy being Americans that we dedicated an extra holiday to celebrate it. Happy Thanksgiving.

You are so naive. The vast majority of the immigrants coming into our country are VERY POOR, who are a burden on our welfare system. The people coming here are practically all coming from 2nd and 3rd-world countries. They come here for economic purposes because their options in their homeland are very limited. Do you think Europeans are coming to America these days? I hear they are doing quite well right now while we are still losing jobs.

That 1 in 8 number only includes legal immigrants, it doesn't even mention the number of illegals, which could add between 12 and 20 million more to that number. Pushing it to about 1 in 5, or 20% of the population that could be foreign born. Statistically up to 40% of the current population could actually be foreign born or first generation American citizens. And people wonder why politically we can't close the floodgates of immigration.

And while this massive immigration has been going on, it has done nothing but fuel division in this country, and destroy wages.

It's because people's opinions are formed from more personal experience with others. since there are a lot of dislikeable americans who aren't caring but arrogant, ignorant, racist or *******s and can be as nasty as any human being can be and be proud to be american. it's been this way from the beginning and immigrants have been tolerated begrudgingly on the 'street' level, on paper and protocol is something different. that's why it seems a contradiction to think america is a beacon of light to many people.
