My electric toothbrush charges without a cable connecting the toothbrush to the base. One day, cars will charge the same way. Perhaps, there will be a grid built into the road, and you could actually charge the car while driving over the chargers. Wouldn't that be neat?

For those who wish to totally ignore free-market economics, it's easy to blame the oil companies and Bush. True ignorance from the left is astounding,....the electric car was developed during the Clinton years and the fact that no one was interested in the product killed it. A billion dollar investment provided only a few hundred takers, so the project died a natural death,....somewhat like the Edsel.

The left looks for the devil on the right, ...and ignores the facts. The liberals want to see black helicopters instead of the truth.

Electric cars are a threat to the oil companies and the oil sheiks in the middle east who were the puppet masters of the Bush administration. They are terrified of electric cars and will go through extreme measures to prevent their development. We could have switched to electric cars a decade ago, but both Democrats and Republicans prevented this especially the NeoCons.
I can well imagine the howls of rage over our interest in alternative energy, but funny thing is that the Saudi's just donated millions and millions to the Bill Clinton charity. So who is still taking the bread crumbs? They all do and this new democratic party is far more corrupt in my opionion.

What do you think of Gore, "So why, then, didn't Gore dump his family's large stock holdings in Occidental (Oxy) Petroleum? As executor of his family's trust, over the years Gore has controlled hundreds of thousands of dollars in Oxy stock. Oxy has been mired in controversy over oil drilling in ecologically sensitive areas. "?

yes very true. and now i will make a statement, our government and chevron lied bold faced on national TV--- gas price flucuations are not supply driven, they are consumption driven.
OPEC and its stooges are fighting hard but oil will go the way of rubber and butter in the 30 & 40's-- their day is at hand-- they will be replaced with cheaper better products.

The short answer to your question is "because of government regulation"

As is already known, it was hugely unprofitable and the technology unproven.
If they had sold the EV1 to consumers, GM would have had to maintain a costly parts and service infrastructure for 15 years as required by federal law.
A lease program was the smart move, as it allowed GM to test the waters but retreat if the technology or economics were proven to be unsustainable, without being tied to a 15 year commitment.
