How about charging drinkers of soft drinks more for their health care? Or, eaters of "bad" foods? How about more for bicycle riders and tennis players and joggers, all of whom get injured? Why not higher health insurance premiums for everyone who drives a car or goes to work or has ever gotten sick?
Hell, let's just raise EVERYONE'S health insurance premiums 100% to pay for the cost of the risk involved in living. Including YOURS.
Ya OK with that? Why not?
Not really. Bicycle riding, playing tennis and jogging actually do more halp than harm when it comes to health. Most people who drive, statistically-speaking do not contribute negatively to the health care system.
Your argument is weak...cigarette smoking has nothing but negative affects on health and the health care system. It does zero good.
I know from personal experience, smoking helps one be prone to rational thought. It should be required in our schools. Obama, of course, is going to make that part of the Education Legislation??? Please, find something worthy of discussion.

Really? Prove it.

Ok, fine. Let's just raise the rates on anyone who ever had a wreck or gotten a speeding or defective equipment ticket (including lack of insurance). How's that? You'd have a hard time proving those things aren't indicators of some future cost-producing problems. Just ask any insurance bean counter or safety administrator at any truck line. After all, statisically, those who've had wrecks or gotten tickets are more apt to have wrecks in the future and those without insurance shove those cost onto someone else...right?

So? Eating a bag of potato chips does zero good too. So does breathing polluted air. So does eating at McDonalds. Raise all their rates too.
He can smoke, fart, belch, drink or chew, or even eat red meat, its a free country. But it is a bit ironic, that people like 0bama would set about punishing people for drinking, smoking, or eating red meat, if they ever got their UHC.
It would be, except that everything you said in this post is blatantly false.
Based on some sound arguments presented here, I stand corrected....
- Smoking is healthy.
- Smoking does not add to overall health costs.
- Obama should not hide his smoking, but rather be more public with it (after all, he IS a role model for future generations.)
- Obama should not only push for a bill that will lower health costs for all Americans, but also continue smoking, in his own personal quest to lower his own direct helath costs.
As a former smoker, the title of this thread really tickles me. It is ironic isn't it? But really, I don't care who speaks out as long as meaningful health care reform is passed.
I don't see Obama as leading the campaign. Sometimes I wish he would but maybe Rahm pulled his coat and suggested it wasn't a good idea with his smoking habit and all...
If a president's activities had any influence on citizens, we'd all be saying nu-ku-ler by now, so no, Obama's smoking is irrelevant to passing health care reform.
Missed the point!
