For a week now, I have been trying to find the correct phrasing of a quote that has been attributed to Walter Cronkite, but he denied that it was his. I read his autobiography and thought that he mentioned this phrase, but I am looking through his book again and cannot find it.
The quote goes something like this: "If both sides call to complain that you were biased toward the other side, then you must have gotten the story right."
Just what is the correct quote? I've tried inputting different key words in Google, but nothing is coming up.
Also, do you know who said it, if Walter didn't?

I don't know if he said it first but I hope not.

That's the most dishonest cliche the media has used on an ongoing basis from to deflect criticism of their shoddy work.

The fact of the matter is one side could be 100% correct while the other side be 100% completely wrong.

What we need from the media is less worrying about how they will perceived and more emphasis on reporting the truth and challenging lies.
