Anti-Californian vandalism/hate in Oregon is like the narcissistic outlooks SNL parodies about CA (hilarious). Both exist. Both are neither the norm nor majority. Just because one finds a living example of the stereotype does not mean it's the prevalent reality. It just means the stereotype has a small basis in fact.

I'm a transplant, though not from California, and haven't had any flak except for a few remarkably ignorant commenters on CD. And in that case, it was only because I made an effort to engage them. It's not like they hunted me down.

Things are unraveling in Portland. Trump's election has driven them crazy. Hating Californians has been ongoing since the 70's. Rooted in jealousy. That's what 9 months of bad weather does to a person.

Your comment about the changing of the plates was ridiculous, but it helped prove a prejudice towards people from CA.

I experienced it myself when I lived in Portland. There were a lot of very nice people but every once in awhile some snarky comment would come up.

I also remember after shortly moving there someone blowing their horn and giving me the middle finger while waiting at a red light, they were on the other side of the road heading in the other direction(so it wasn't like I did anything like cut them off), couldn't figure out at first what was wrong, it was the CA plates.

Charming.

I faced some of this when I moved to Oregon from California in 1985. I was 19, had no money, so I was no equity refugee driving up housing prices. There was definitely an anti-CA sentiment back then, so this is nothing new. I changed my plates and blended in. It's not that difficult.

I am born and raised Californian and I can say that there are so many Californians, NorCal and SoCal, everywhere you go. Most of us are doing ok but sure, there are jerks that don't want new transplants but it's usually OTHER transplants.

I have to wonder whether, with the new passion for federal immigration regulations, including rampant suspicion and general vilifying of outsiders, we'll see a resurgence of that James Blaine Society spirit in Oregon. If it works for Muslims, it might work for Californians. Did you know that Californians have rugs on which they daily bow down in the direction of Sacramento (or maybe Hollywood)? Well, so it is said.

If you're big, sexy, and come with "endowments" we'll love you like you've never been loved. Please come, we'll help find you a room.

Otherwise can you know your place and stay out? Don't you understand yet, we hate you and your inability to be an adult. We're full and we don't need more losers and little boys with beards.

I'm fine with transplants as long as they don't adversely affect me financiailly.

To the extent the transplants come in and inflate prices, dropping an out-of-state bundle on a place next-door to you that isn't worth it, it's the worth of your home that's being inflated (as well as your property tax, of course).

While the early resistance to Oregon immigration was curiously based on a perceived need for population control, I think the main resistance to transplants these days is the culture that is often transplanted with them that displaces our own. Hard to put a price tag on that.
