I'm coming to visit Portland to research a possible move for my family and am looking for ideas for hotels that would be safe and not hugely expensive (over $100 is expensive). Anyone got recommendations on where to avoid or where is good? Thanks!

We went through Travelocity so I'm not sure of the exact price, but the Westin Portland (downtown) was wonderful.

Default little known place to stay

There are lots of great places to stay that are in the 115-150 a night range. One little known spot is $75!

I've heard good things about the PDX Guesthouse and you can get a room for as little as $65. Plus, it is in a great location for exploring. Portland International Guesthouse

there are several guesthome directories that you stay in private homes for ~$20/ night.
We have been hosting and using them for about 20 yrs., especially nice when traveling internationally and in the countryside (Non-urban, farming based, but there are places in town too). Great when searching for a new location it's nice as you get to meet real people with experience living in the area.

We started using a homeschool based directory back in the '80's (published from Portland area) We did several 1+ month long 'field trips'

search your social networks and see what is available, The one's which we are currently members are pretty conservative for the OR forum, (but plenty of available places in Portland area for us 'social outcasts' )

There's a Hilton Garden Inn in Beaverton that's reasonably priced. It's in the burbs, but it's right on the Sunset Highway, and with no traffic it's just about 10 minutes into downtown Portland. It's in a newer techpark area.

Default some tips

Hey we just been researching this on the net and here is what I found;(should save you a few hours of searching)

Priceline.com(name your price deals) gives up to 50%off the rrp and we got our 2* hotel for $45/nit in Beaverton. They also have specials everyday for specific plaes all over the US.

Also found a place in Beaverton(for stays of 5 nights or more only(called weekly rate)) called shiloh inns suite hotel beaverton at $59/night-I liked this one!
I found priceline $$ better for what we needed and our accomodation has a kitchen for $45. Trying to save as much $$ as possible! By the way I have a family so dont wanna share room/stay at lodge which would be cheaper...But you said hotel.

There is a nice hotel near airport called ramada inn suite portland airport(looks good!) at $79/night. I found that if I use expedia.com and look at the top 100 and then look for hotels from highest rating at low prices and then use the hotel website page and see what direct deals they have direct(no dealer used) generally gives good price!

All the best! Hope this helps!
PS some real cheap rental cars at dollar rentals around $11/day or $90/wk for compact car. SO cheap! This is from PDX as well!
