I am almost 41 and working on having a child. My wife and I have had for unsuccessfull months and so far I am not sure month 5 will take either. Her doctor said to try for about six months then if nothing happens we will get checked for fertility. How long did it take for some of you who were planning? And what did you do to help the process?
We tried during 4 years before it got successful - and I actually had to go through IVF to get pregnant.
It's a good thing your wife's doc is planning on getting both of you checked soon; the sooner you know if there is a problem, the sooner you'll be able to make a decision, if needed.
Good luck!

Just tell the Dr. you have been trying for 6 months if your wife is 35 or older. You don't have any time to waste. How old is your wife? Your age has nothing to do with it.
You should buy the clear plan easy fertility monitor. You can google it. It is awesome.

Hi,
She is 39, so she is up there in child bearing years also. We do a fertility monitor so we know when the most fertile times are. I know it will only be five months so far. but its kinda frustrating, I was hoping to conceive on the first go around foolish me.

Just lie to the Dr. You have waited long enough. I think you will need to start some fertility testing. You need to get a sperm count done. Is your wife ovulating? Does she get a peak on her fertility monitor?
Do you know how many things have to go right in order to conceive? It's not as easy as it seems. For couples under 35 it could take 1 yr. However if the woman is older than 35 then they advise testing if you haven't conceived in 6 months. I am an impatient person so I would just lie and say I have been trying for 6 months.
The things they will test you for will be sperm count and motility. Your wife's hormones will be tested to see if she is ovulating and she will probably need an HSG test which will check to see if her tubes are blocked. If her tubes are blocked you will need IVF.
Also try not to stress about it. My OB told me that stress messes up a woman's hormones and makes it more difficult to conceive.
I wish you the best of luck with this and if you have any further questions let me know
It takes most couples about 4-6 months to conceive - even with properly times sex, so don't worry that it didn't happen the first try!
If you decide to wait the 6 months (though I agree with the other posters' suggestion to just tell the doc it's already been that long), your wife want might to try charting her cycles with her basal body temperature. Charting gives one a lot of insight. Also, the first and easiest/non-invasive thing to check is sperm.
I was 37 when my daughter was born (after 4 years of "unexplained infertility"), and my second is due this February, and I'm in my 40s now (pleasant surprise, since we weren't trying at all)
I conceived at age 40 after two unprotected encounters with my husband. I didn't think I was still fertile and it was a happy surprise.
I conceived #1 at age 29 within 2 months of trying. I used an ovulation chart based on my menstruation cycle and tried on every fertile day. It took about three months to conceive #2 at age 31, also using charts. You can find the charts I used on BabyCenter | Homepage - Pregnancy, Baby, Toddler, Kids.
I would definitely recommend a visit with a fertility specialist just to get everything checked out. Even if you don't want or need treatments, they can help you plan the best days to try to conceive.
Some people just take longer than others. It took my neighbor eight years to conceive her dd without fertility drugs or treatments and doctors could find nothing wrong. Most of my friends tried for several months before conceiving. Good luck!

Hey congradulations on your child in febuary. Yes, I am going to get checked out. I still have till the end of this month to find out if the fifth month is a charm. Then we will probably try again month six. Then see the fertility doc in January if nothing has happend.
I guess since I am already pushing 41 and wife 39, I am in such a hurry to make it happen.

Not True, Studies have found that for men, after age 40, there is decreased semen quantity, and decreased sperm mobility.
I agree with the others though, why wait? Start checking out both of you ASAP to get the ball rolling.
Stay very positive though, 39 is still WAY in the ballgame!
I used the book,"Taking charge of your Fertility". I conceived my kids at 40 after 4 months, at 43 after 5 months, and at 47 when we weren't even exactly trying! I have a friend who accidently got pregnant at 41 [after 3 kids]
Stay proactive in your quest, and try not to stress. There are lots of us older parents out there that have had great outcomes.
Good Luck.

Trust me men can have children into their 60's and beyond. The woman is the one that has the ticking biological clock
Perhaps you are just naturally fertile like I am. Wow you had a baby at 47????
