I suspect that they don't consider getting caught, or they think they can make excuses for themselves and talk their way out of it.
I get felons try to rent from me and they are all outraged that they are suffering consequences for their own actions. I hear a lot about how unfair it is.
According to numerous anecdotes from police officers, investigators, interrogators and my own brother whose specialty this is....the answer is no, they do not believe they will be caught if the act is committed with planning. Those who commit crimes in the heat of passion are incapable of thinking beyond the moment, hence the term "heat of passion."
I agree with Felix that those who commit crimes "in the heat of passion" aren't thinking of consequences...but for any others I's have to say YES, they do think about the consequences, but in their own minds the crime trumps those...or they just flat out don't care.
