If age makes a difference, our chihuahua is three years old and the vet never even mentioned X-rays. Sounds like another case of "your mileage may vary."

Some vets take films of the teeth which is also an extra charge of approx $150 plus.

Is this type of care needed before the teeth are cleaned? I don't know and it depends on each case. Since my dog is a senior I'm erring on the side to get this type of work done this time. If she was younger, I would most likely skip this since she has been on the healthy side. But her age is a big factor at this point.

As far as your dog's teeth, I would get some more opinions. I have already been to 3 vets for evaluations. Prices and procedures used are not consistent.
I feel your breed has a lot to do with it as well. A 10 yr old smaller dog is not as old as a 10 yr large breed.

Get some Milk Bone dog biscuits, they are just fine for cleaning your dog's teeth. I've had large dogs all my life, and never once had a dog's teeth cleaned. (Also big dogs love hooves -- but you have to get them at a quality pet store (not imitation hooves, real ones). They don't smell real good, but dogs love them and they are good for their teeth as well.

And that vet who wants(ed) to do x-rays before cleaning the dog's teeth is a money grubbing dufus.
Pretty soon there will be vets who want to do cavity fillings. D'oh !

I know, they're awful ... but the dogs love 'em. I used to put some peanut butter in the hoof and put it out on the porch, kept my big dog busy for a long time out there with the breeze blowing thru.

We took our one cat to Punta Gorda Animal Hospital today. Could not be happier. Doctor was very nice and answered all questions. Exam and script written for $53. In PA, we never get out of the vet for less than $200!
