Can't expect for a rental car to have CD players anymore--rental car companies usually purchase the lowest trim level of a particular model for their fleets.

I made sure that my aftermarket head unit had HD Radio built-in and a CD player. It also came with a PS/2 port for the SXM Connect tuner.

Finally got the optional Connect tuner (easily purchased at Best Buy) because there are too many dead zones around Houston for streaming to work.
Even the satellite radio Sirius? That blips out when near buildings.

Music on FM sounds good.

On AM, not so much

Oldies as far as how old? 50's? Most stations now if any are playing 80's.

and running the same songs into the ground on every station that plays songs from that era, after dropping worthier songs from earlier times. I'd be generous if I gave any music station in the San Diego radio market any better than a C minus out of the dozens of stations picked up.

This is true which is why I preferred my cassettes and CD recordings I used to do myself and program the songs in the order I wanted them in.
I must learn this new flashdrive stuff on the new cars to put music together using these computers and smartphones.

Otherwise I will go with satellite Stereo Sirius on next vehicle purchase.

I use FM everyday (AM, every once in a while) as I am blessed to have fantastic stations around me. Best part, it's FREE.

AM is great for traffic reports and long distance. But not good for fidelity/music.

A couple of oldies stations in the Chicago area are high in the ratings. The listeners as well as advertisers love them.
