Default Just moved to NC. Any suggestions for finding a reasonable home near RTP?

My husband and I just moved to North Carolina. We're lucky in that we managed to sell our home in Maplewood, New Jersey relatively fast. We work near the RTP and would like to stay in the area (like the commute). We don't want to spend more than $300-315K on the new home. A lot of the homes in near the RTP are out of our price range. Any suggestions for areas where we can find a home in our price range? How about Southwest Durham? Are there areas that are more culturally diverse than others?

Yes, you can find lots of great homes in your price range in southern Durham. As for cultural & ethnic diversity, I don't know the actual population statistics, but the elementary school closest to my house in southern Durham is approximately 45% white, 45% black, and 10% other ethnicities. And the area is right in the middle of everything, so it's very convenient. Check out zip codes 27713 & 27707. Hope you find something you like!

For that price, you'll easily find something nice. Yes, southern Durham has a lot. Just start driving around the Southpoint area and you'll find properties starting from the early 100k's. There's some new developments too, but they run much higher. I think there is also some new communities being built at the end of 147, south of the 40 on route 55 (Williams St.). A great commute to RTP.

Of course, if you want to move to another development community that is still within a 5-10 minute drive, you could check out the new development off route 70 east of Miami. I think it's Brier Creek.

If you want to start off with an older community with older inexpensive homes, small sized (900 to 1900 sq. ft. +/-) under a 100k, you could look at Pleasant Avenue west of the 70 and Miami but east of the 147 north of Ellis... or off Geer St. east of the 70, south of the 85 and north of Cheek (these homes range from under 100k to 200k). Older homes, sort of undiscovered, but safe and quiet.

Between downtown and west of the 70/Miami can be quite sketchy, for now. They'll be a resurgence there soon, but it'll take some more time. Not for the faint of heart. But beautiful homes just waiting to be restored.

You have a wealth of choices.

New or Resale?
You have many choices for resale homes, in great neighborhoods.
In Durham County:
Woodcroft, Grandale area, Garrett Road, really too many to list...

In Wake County:
Breckenridge, Kitts Creek, Twin Lakes, McCrimmon at the Park(new)
Many more just a couple of miles farther.

Cary Area: Keystone Crossing is in the heart of RTP and it's NEW CONSTRUCTION!! PULTE HOMES is also building New Construction right off of Davis Drive called McCrimmon at the Park. It's a small neighborhood and will push your price range to $350k. Kitts Creek and Twin Lakes will also put a push on your price range.

Durham
Hope Valley Downs and Woodcroft are always safe choices.

Exclamation Just moved to NC. Any suggestions for finding a reasonable home near RTP?

Take a look at Ardmore at Reedy Creek, very upscale, luxury townhomes in your price range.
