Didn't they also add $8.00 to EVERY car registration to finance this too???

Folks are using the publicly-funded portions of NC 540 today without any tolls. The option will remain in the future, but you will be charged tolls to do so.

Overall, I don't see 540 making much money until the southlands get built out much more extensively than they are today.
This will be interesting to watch. If ridership is below expected levels, does that mean that the tolls will need to be increased to cover the shortfall?

About 2 years ago, I had a conversation with someone at NCDOT regarding the tolls on the future NC540.

In conversation, he said that the tolls will be in place for approx. 40 years.

I'm not worried. We've been promised flying cars long before then, so I'll be able to zoom right over NC540 and avoid the tolls.

good point, especially as the town of Cary is planning to build a wall along the 540 extension to replace the natural buffer at Cameron Pond that was chopped down to make way for utility poles

I hope not. I dont know why they would block it off. How would people get to 40 from 147?

To the people complaining about 540 becoming a toll road; I bet a good percentage of you come from states with toll roads and the ironic thing is that the main reason we are having to build (and pay) for these roads is because you moved here. Again, I am definitely pro-growth and I welcome all with open arms, but someone has to pay for your suburban lifestyle.

After 40 years, I'm sure the state will be very eager to tear down those toll booths because that's what they promised. Haha.

I hope everyone uses it, that way there will be less congestion on the alternate routes (which I will be using) !
