Right now we live in Northeast Raleigh because my daughter has been going to Wake Tech College. I work in North Durham off 15-501 so I have a really long commute. Now that she will be graduating and going off to a 4 year college, we can FINALLY move closer to where I work. I dont think I want to live in Durham but not really sure what else is out there. I dont want to have more than a 15-20 minute commute. We will be renting and are looking for a house with a fenced yard for our dogs. We dont mind an older house and want a nice quiet neighborhood. So does anyone has any thoughts about where might be a good place to start looking? We are not against going in the other direction, away from Durham (away from Raleigh).
North Durham is the nicest part of Durham in my opinion. Less traffic, much more house for your $, prettier, more mature trees and landscaping (not as much clear cut tiny lots like southwest durham). Its win-win.
Given that the OP is looking for something near the boulevard, I wouldn't go with North Durham. I mean, traffic coming in on Roxboro or Guess can be quite unnerving... even if the OP already does the 540 to 40 trek every day (which would drive me postal).
There are neighborhoods like Parkwood that are very nice in the southern part of Durham that do not have the cookie cutter feel. But away from Durham, there is Hillsborough, Chapel Hill (86/New Hope Road area?) and Efland/Mebane (although the last two are pushing the commute wishes of the OP.
Hillsborough! We have a 14 minute beautiful commute to American Tobacco District.
