**Update** 5-25-2011

I finally heard back from Wake County...they reduced my bill by a whopping $19.30. I'm glad I appealed it even though the minor adjustment. Thought I would provide the update, especially for those who would want to appeal their vehicle tax. I say do it, every little bit helps.

I know this is an old thread, but wanted to chime in. My darling wife was able to successfully appeal our home's assessed value, reducing it by $35K, which should save us a few hundred in taxes. New Construction, we supplied comps as well as pointing out that our "Grade" of A+15 seemed out of line with other houses in the area which are also new construction, of similar quality and amenities. This Grade makes a huge difference in the assessed value, so you should look at that as well. Not sure if that was the clincher or they simply realized the house was assessed incorrectly, but I am happy either way. Well worth the few hours it took her.

While this is an old thread, I wanted to provide my experience at appealing as others may come across this thread through searching.

I have a 2011 Mazda CX-9 that I bought used in Dec 2014 while in NJ. I relocated to NC in January and registered my car.

The appraised value was: $17,880

I emailed revhelp@wakegov.com a copy of a service invoice from Dec 2014 which indicated the mileage of 79,099 and appealed the value.

Within 2 hours I received confirmation back that my appeal was accepted and adjustments had been made to the value.

My revised appraised value is: $15,734 and I will therefore be receiving a refund of $19.92.

So the process was very easy, quick and successful in this example. It may not be a large difference from a refund perspective, however I will continue to benefit the lower appraised value each year.

Just be glad you are in NC. Here in Greenville County SC the annual vehicle tax is approx. 2.5% of the current value. On a $15700 vehicle your tax would be $392 (plus roads tax of $25 and every other year a "renewal fee" as well...)

Yes, there are many other states that charge many times the fees that have been posted in this thread. We just registered our car in one state for almost $500 and entering NC it won't be nearly as bad (it looks like)
