With school starting up next week, thought it would be fun for the family to go out for a late-night meal / early breakfast around 3am or 3:30am - just a odd event to bond and make memories (13-15 years age).

Can you guys provide any recommendation of places that are open at that hour?

Coming to mind are:
- Waffle house (open 24 hours here?)
- IHOP (are all ihop's 24 hours here?)
- McDonalds (some places are open 24 hours I think - locations?)
- Others????

Waffle Houses are open 24 hours.
The IHOP on Hillsborough St in Raleigh is open 24 hours, but the ones in Cary and Apex are not. Don't know about other locations.
I think the McDonalds that are open 24 hours, its just the drive through thats open late night.
If you're in or near Raleigh, try the Raleigh Diner in the Glenwood South area. Its open 24/7.

I second The Diner simply because it's more unique and a more fun atmosphere than the typical chain places open that late (or early).

Steak N' Shake has always been a favorite of mine and my friends to go for late night eating. Always felt safe and friendly even at the late late hours. They don't usually bug you to hurry our either.

Time Out (of Chapel Hill fame) has a a place on Hillsborough St. The UNC location is open 365/24/7, not sure about the Raleigh version.

Coming from a place where there are many more places to eat late at night, I was disappointed that there are so few in the Triangle area, which confuses me because this area has about four times the population and three times as many colleges and universities! I'll have to check out the Diner and Time Out.

IHOP has been my favorite early morning eating spot in Raleigh. The food is much better than Waffle House. Steak and Shake is pretty good. It's also better than Waffle House. Denny's has a promising menu, but I haven't eaten at one where the food lived up to the potential in years, but I haven't tried the one on Wake Forest Rd. Perhaps the management is doing a better job at that one than the ones I've visited.
