I am contemplating a move in the future to a more humid climate due to medical reasons and for lower college costs. I'm trying to get an idea of housing costs to see how realistic this is for our family. I need to be in traveling distance to Duke University Hospital and would like our daughters to attend Central Carolina Community College in Lee County. Some ideas on an approximate half way point would be so helpful in our search.
We don't want to live in the city, but on the outskirts-more rural but close enough to get to these places. We want a simple 3 bedroom ranch home, but have a pony and a miniture horse that need to come along with us and we need to keep costs down. I'd also like to be in a realistic distance to attend a Quaker meeting around the Snow Camp area? Possibly a pastoral meeting?
Any ideas? It would be much appreciated!

Jan Lyn

Are you wanting the CCCC in SAnford? This would be a great stretch of driving from Duke, close to Sanford and driving to SNow Camp?

Why CCCC? How about Wake Tech or community college nearer to Duke / Durham? Even Towards Snow Camp ./ SAxapahaw?

Yes, I was thinking CCCC in Sandford as my daughter wants a 2 year Vet Tech program. Yet, I will need a few specialist doctors at Duke that I was recommended and that would be on-going for me.

So, living half at an approximate half way point between the 2 is not really a realistic commute? Myself to the area with doctors and our daughters to CCCC? (We can scratch Snow Camp, as I know there are meetings/churches in other locations.)

I'm not aware that any of the other Community Colleges have Vet Tech in that area, but might be mistaken.
Thanks for thinking this through with me!

I think if you live somewhere around Pittsboro the commute to Durham and Sanford is reasonable. I used to do a similar commutes (both ways) and it was not really a problem. I am not quite sure of housing prices in the area though.

With regard to Quaker meetings might I ask what type of Quakerism are you looking for? (e.g. programmed, semi-programmed, unprogrammed, FGC, Conservative, FUM, etc.) North Carolina and particularly the triangle/triad is fairly diverse in its Quaker meetings.

Well, I attend a unprogrammed (liberal) Quaker meeting here and my husband prefers a Christian church. We were hoping to find a compromise in visiting a pastoral meeting, but I am open to any.
Pittsboro looked like a good point on the map to me also. Maybe a 45 minute commute or so to the hospital area and a little less to CCCC in Sandford? Is it a decent area? We don't care about public schools as our kids have been/are home schooled and are finishing up in the next few years, thus our search in NC. We are putting a son through college here in NJ and the cost is astronomical as well as the housing.
Thanks for all your consideration!

Does Alamance Community College offer anything? That would be a bit closer than Sanford I think.

Pittsboro looks like a typical southern country town with a courthouse square and a few shops in a walkable downtown. It is a nice area, and I'm sure you can find a small rural house on land near-by.

Until recently, I lived in Eastern Lee County, near the junction of Wake, Chatham and Lee (very close to Harnet too). Look up Moncure or Corinth on mapquest, just to get a general idea.

Very rural, 45 minutes to Duke (we go at least 4-6x per year), 35-40 minutes to my work in RTP, 10 minutes to the Sanford campus of CCC, 20 minutes to Pittboro, and about 30 minutes to any shopping you could possibly want in Cary.

I would assume that the proximity to CCCC is more important at 3-5x per week, versus a commute of less than an hour to Duke, which I hope you can have the pleasure of doing less frequently.

Hope this helps. The areas exist, you just have to find what you want.

Oh, and by the way, we were about 2 miles from a massive Horse Ranch with boarding options...

Matt

Depends on what you want. Pittsboro itself is fairly smalltown/rural. If you go a little further northeast along 15-501 it is still mostly rural, but there are a smattering of devolpments due to the close proximity to Chapel Hill. While I don't know much about real estate itself, Pittsboro and that area is much more affordable then Chapel Hill, in large part because they don't have the schools, but that doesn't seem like it would be a problem. The driving times are about right and 15-501 is fairly easy driving too boot.

As to quaker meetings there are unprogrammed ones in Durham and Chapel Hill, I have not attended the Durham one, but the Chapel hill one is quite nice. I also know there are some very nice semi-programmed meetings around, but they tend to be more in the Greensboro/Randolph county area which would be quite a drive.

Wow, you all are great. I did not expect so many responses so quickly. Yes, hopefully my trips to Duke would be about 6-8 times per year, so college (and landing my husband a job!) would be most important. I commute to Phile, Pa for my medical care here about that many days per year and it is an hour and a half commute. We are definately interested in improving that and enabling myself to go it alone at times, too, which I could if it were shorter.

Thanks for all your input. I'm eager to look up these options on a map and look for potential prices of homes. I'm unsure about Alamance CC. It definately has some Animal Science program, but it appears not to lead to a Vet Tech job-the website is a bit confusing, where CCC's in Sandford is clearly Vet Tech.

I'd be eager to check out any Quaker meetings. Thanks for the tip on Chapel Hill. Many have websites now. I will look on quakerfinder.org.

Thanks again!
Jan Lyn
