I was in the Shell gas station off the NC54 exit of 40 and a police officer was in there asking the clerks about a homeless man that begs at the exit off-ramp. I wonder if he was looking to write the guy a ticket...

I don't really get the point of begging permits. At first I thought it was a little more money for the city/county, but the link says they don't charge.

I think it's just so they can keep tabs on people.

If they are arresting homeless beggars, then they are making there day.
Free meals, food, showers in possible crowded jail til there time is served.

No alcohol or drugs in jail. Stereotyping, yes, but once you've been around enough of them you learn that's the real reason they want the money.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Don't give money to a bum.

Absolutely, positively never give money to a beggar. Instead, direct your dollars to a charity that works directly with the homeless. When you give money to a beggar, you're only encouraging a lifestyle that simply can't last.

Give them food. You can keep non-perishables in your car (granola bars and bottles of water). If someone is truly in need, they will appreciate it. Then you are helping them but not helping their (possible) addiction. I also second peperoberto's suggestion. I know the women's shelter and rescue mission in Wake county both have case management staff that help them with rehab, therapy, housing, etc.

We've been down this road before:

Panhandlers

Panhandler's in Downtown Durham?

homeless at Jones Sausage/I-40 on ramp

So let's stick to the topic of panhandlers being arrested.

Thanks!
