The below link doesn't have much information that hasn't already been discussed here, but it has some neat pictures of the stream that is currently underground:

Do you have a link for this? That's not the impression I got speaking with a CoC member last year about attracting convention business to the area.

They had an article about it in the News and Observer a year or two ago how the convention center was exceeding expectations despite the economy. I'd search for it but their website doesn't play nice on my phone lol.

Just went to San Antonio for a convention. I must say I was not that impressed. The Riverwalk is very like Bourbon Street or Beale Street, that is cheap restaurants selling cheap drinks and crowds of people drinking too much. There were some nicer parts, but the bulk was just way too crowded and totally not my thing.

The other thing that hit me was that as soon as you "popped up" from the Riverwalk (it is below grade) downtown San Antonio is not very nice. I could see how families would not want to be walking around there are night....not many streets were totally "tourist friendly". The area around the Alama is kinda iffy.It was as if the convention tourist trade turns itself to the Riverwalk and has turned its back to the rest of SA. The side of the big hotels facing downtown were all transportation areas and service area....ugly. I did hop a bus and go wander around some close in neighorhoods, go to the Blue Star arts district, etc. so really like some of those areas. But would I want a San Antonio Riverwalk in Raleigh? No.

Would I like that stream along the old Devereaux meadows to be daylighted as a green space which was part of a bigger plan for making that area of the Capital Blvd entrance to Raleigh much nicer....absolutely. But think that making that little low flow stream could turn into a tourist area that would be a draw for conventioneers....no!

I wonder if the area along Crabtree Creek could be turned into a riverwalk. While they're doing that, they could also make it more flood-proof with dikes on either side, or raised sidewalks. You've already got Crabtree Valley Mall in the area; the walk could tie into that.

The trouble with the creek itself is that it is completely piped and built over as it traverses south under Peace St and through Glenwood South. Its best possibility is to be a defining/unifying feature along a redeveloped Devereux Meadows project whether it's parkland, commercial or a combination of both.
