NCDOT is going to appropriately call this project "Crawleigh".
They are recommending 540-64-440 as a detour, which will add about 14 miles when traversing the triangle.
Taking the beltline instead of 40 adds only 4 miles but will probably be plenty congested itself.
All in all this will add up to several years of traffic misery on local freeways. All for a project that involves almost no widening at all.
Meanwhile, Charlotte STILL has not a complete beltway at ALL. And people in the Triangle worry about getting their SECOND one finished (!!!) and repaving 440 or 440/40 or 40 or whatever they're now calling it. (BTW, they should NEVER have removed the Inner and Outer designations...how dumb). I used to live there, so no need explaining which road we're talking about here...I know...the stretch from 64/1 to 40/Wilmington. What gets us in the "State of Mecklenburg" is how we are MUCH more urban, yet every road to every one horse town within 30 miles of the Triangle has been upgraded to freeways. And we sit...and we wait in traffic on underbuilt highways and two laners....and frankly, it isn't really fair considering the taxes that are generated here. It reminds me of Knoxville vs Nashville. Knoxville, for some reason, has much better highways than MUCH larger Nashville.
It's refreshing to see someone from Charlotte talk about the superiority of the Triangle.
Back to the topic at hand - DOT is saying the lane closures might start tomorrow.
