My husband had an old Honda Accord hatchback that got 40mpg, consistently. And it only cost $6500 when he bought it used in 1996 (it was an '89). Drove it for 12 years until he wrecked it. This is why I'm hesitant to put money into new technology for better fuel efficiency. I like the idea, but it doesn't seem like these cars get any better gas mileage than some of the traditionally built cars they just cost a ton more. Now if you told me they get 60-80mpg that would be worth it, imho.

I'd rather not use either!

But we're still using plenty of Duke Power's electricity in the house. Wish we could be completely off-grid, but at least we got the car off-grid.

I agree Pegotty, I had a 90s Honda Civic hatch that got 40 mpg, too. Diesels generally get better mileage than their gas counterparts. Check out the biodiesel info. It might be something you're interested in.

It says:

We apologize. The Plugged In Program has reached capacity and is no longer accepting applications. Thank you for your interest in the program.

I thought about calling and begging

Here you can see the LEAF was rated at 99 MPGe. Nissan Leaf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Honda Fit EV is 118 MPGe, but they're not available on the east coast (yet).

Static G, where do you work? There are electric charging stations in a few locations in Downtown Raleigh, including the municipal parking decks.

So, perhaps a dumb question since I don't know much about this technology.

Charging at home wouldn't be a problem. I have a garage. But, what if I was to go on a road trip? Where do you charge? And, is it something that can be done quickly or does it have to be done overnight?
