I've wondered the same thing. I know I will be backing in one direction or the other so there is no savings with either choice, but to me it seems odd to back into your own driveway - unless you are a Volunteer Fireman perhaps. It seems far trickier and difficult to back safely between two parked cars in a parking lot than to back into a double wide aisleway.
Here in the North it seems to be very much of an ethnic thing, as well as with drivers of oversized Trucks and SUVs which offer no good visibility in any direction.
Maybe it makes it easier to escape quickly when the driver screws up and crunches another car in the lot?
I always backed the fire truck in, so I just continued with the tradition. I back into parking spaces too. You got to back up one way or the other...so I prefer backing in and pulling out.
I have an indelible image in my mind of a lady in a nearly empty Food Lion parking lot. She got into her van which was surrounded by vacant parking spots. Not a car within three or four spaces all around.
And she backed out. Sometimes it is hard to break a habit.
We have a sloping driveway so visibility is poor when trying to back out of the driveway. We live in a neighborhood with a lot of little kids running around. It's just easier to see coming out that way and less of a chance of someone getting run over.
If I had to back out into any type of traffic, I'd pull in backwards as well. Luckily I have a circle drive...and no traffic.
My grandparents lived on a semi-busy road with a 25mph speed limit, but people used to fly up and down that road. I HATED backing out of their driveway!
I can't believe people are actually trying to correlate backing into a driveway to being a "southern" or "northern" thing. Or even an "ethnic" thing. This is truly an odd topic.
Like someone said, you have to back out/in either way. I always back into a parking spot or driveway. I drive a truck and its easier to back in when you 'conrtol the traffic lane' then it is to back into the traffic lane you arent 'controling'. Also, if have to make a quick escape, its much easier going forward.....
And when the zombies come...who wants to take time to back out of the driveway??
Plus, for a procrastinator, its good practice at doing now what you could put off till you leave...just seems lazy to me...
And when the zombies come...who wants to take time to back out of the driveway??
Yes, when Zombie Apocalypse happens you will be glad you backed in.
Seriously, its a safety thing and many companies that have a field force go through driver safety training. One of the things they told us was to either "pull through" a parking space or back into it...safely, of course.
