Just got back from taking 540 from Holly Springs to get to Southpoint. We love that so many people don't want to pay to use it. Happy to cruise at 70 and never have to change a lane or pass anyone.

I went on 540 today at rush hour for the first time since the speed limit went to 70. I used to do 70 all the time.

But now, HOLY CRAP!

Just as I thought would happen, people are going FAR faster than the limit.

I'll avoid it at all costs...no wonder there are so many more cars in North Raleigh at rush hour -- they must be avoiding 540!

What an idiotic decision to raise the limit.

I see just the opposite, I think traffic move a LOT slower now that it's been raised to 70. I drive 540 every day, and quite often NOT during rush hour. And I think the majority of cars are doing less than 70.

This is what I've seen as well. I was shocked that other cars were either going right at 70 or less.

I've noticed no speed changes either, which is consistent with what the studies suggest.

It's especially apparent heading east when you cross NC70 and folks have the opportunity to legally drive faster - I've never observed a speed increase, the dowhill section past the NC70 on ramp not withstanding.

I agree - the raised speed limit means less people violate the limit, not that they continue to drive faster. It's well documented in driving studies that there is a self-limit most people adhere to. The 70 mph limit is more in line with the mean most people drive.

I have driven this stretch of 540 all but once during non-peak hours, and I enjoy the faster limits. For the most part folks tend to stay in the right lanes if they are driving slower.
