Been living in our current neighborhood for 16 years and our current house for almost 12 years. We've invested heavily in our home including over 10kW of solar PV panels, geothermal heating and cooling, a pool, a workshop/extra garage, etc. so we don't plan to move for a very long time. At least until my 4 year old is in or out of college, and maybe not even after that for a while. We love the area, the neighborhood, and the city in general.
We have built 5 homes. I like NEW! We used to move every 4 years until we built the house we are in now. We have lived here 22 years! I never expected to live here more than 4 years but once the kids were all in school and doing well, we just stayed put.
I'd move (downsize) if I could find the perfect home in North Raleigh. I love Wake Forest but hubby wants to stay in North Raleigh. I got my eye on a n'hood that one of my favorite builders will be starting soon. So, stay tuned!
Been here in this house 15 years. No plans on selling ever. This place is old and outdated...and don't give a flip. My daughter can worry with it someday.
The longest we've lived in a house is 4 years 9 months. We have no intention of moving. We love our house, but we have a knack for falling in love with an open house or model when we're just nosing around on weekends. This house has a first floor master and a kitchen we love so there is no reason to move even after the kids find their way out of the house (which should be no more than 10 years from now if all goes as it should.)
I know the feeling of looking at a new model, it's like looking at a new car, you really want it! I have been so tempted to get a brand new house in the past but at the same time I love my neighborhood. Of course I could always have my house torn down and a new house built on the same spot hmmm

I'm curious if the solar panels and geothermal heating and cooling are ridiculously expensive? Any tax breaks to offset the cost?
No - our first home was not bought with an eye toward resale. We lived in north raleigh for 10+ years before spontaneously deciding to 'right size' our house and move into a different one that fits our needs with two teens. my advice - if you aren't interested in moving, then don't ever step foot into any open houses or parade of homes! haha! we were perfectly happy in our home until we found a fab open floor plan with a 1st floor master at an amazing price & put our house on the market!
However, we did choose this house with the firm idea of selling in 4-8 years. 4 yrs if our kids don't go to raleigh/durham/chapel hill colleges. 8 years if one or more kid goes to local colleges in order to maintain a local base for them...then we'll move into a smaller home after they are 'launched'.
so yes - we built our current home with a mind toward resale in a few years...e.g.: basement! with plenty of storage, guest bedroom/bath and open office/extra flex space for a large in-law suite or play area. We may not get the money back for money spent, however homes with basements seem to sell faster as folks snap them up (as long as they aren't 'smelly and dank' -- refer to 'basement thread' for the humor in that statement...).

Same with us...we've had 2 new homes and hope to design our third with a good custom builder that does modest sized homes (~2500 -2700 sq/ft_+ some type of basement for a game/HT room for the kids and woodshop for me). We love our area (Brookstone in Cary) and hope to build near there. I don't see myself buying an existing home but we have not totally dismissed the idea.
