These cities are both growing cities, state capitals, college towns, etc. So which do you think is better, what are the pro's and cons of each city, public transportation, amenities, weather, entertainment, school/colleges, architecture, more progressive etc...?

Which would be a better starter city for someone who hasn't ever relocated?

Never been to Ohio, but for someone just moving, try it. Too many people moving to this area-not that I'm new here or anything......

There's no such thing as "which is better?"--each has things that appeal to some and not to others. We can't answer which one fits your criteria more since we are not you. Check the unemployment rates in your industry in the state/city you're considering; don't just move somewhere "on a wing and a prayer" in this day and age.

There is a "City vs City" forum where comparisons between City X and City Y are made.

public transportation - I'll give it to Columbus but neither are very good
amenities - ehh depends what you mean...similar in a lot of ways. They are both state capitals, lots of college sports, NHL hockey
weather - Raleigh unless you like months of cold grey days
entertainment - again depend on what you are interested in. Columbus is a more centralized so it's easier to get to events/restaurants/etc
school/colleges - good schools in both cities
architecture - dunno
more progressive - I'll give this one to Columbus which seems slightly more progressive than Raleigh. Maybe if you moved Chapel Hill to DT Raleigh, it would be closer
