I do think there is a rough spot when you have a Kindergartener or first or second grader who can read, but is not emotionally ready to talk about some things or when a graphic image is thrust in the face of a young child whether they can read or not, such as at a protest. I don't want to censor free speech, but I do wish people would find another way to make their point sometimes.
Everyone is so entitled....they expect the world around them to shield them from things they aren't "ready for". As if, when they grow up, it will remain the same. This is exactly what's causing our self-centered, myopic, entitled society today - the EXPECTATION that the world should act in MY best interests all the time. Do yourself a favor and let your kid experience a little reality when it happens to them, instead of trying to protect them from every little thing. And if you're not ready to discuss, great, "I don't know" or change the subject. Parenting 101.

I see this kind of stuff as cultural germs. You can wash your hands as best you can, but sometimes you catch a cold. You sneeze, sniffle, then get over it.
Besides, if she wants to protect her kids from any possible harm they may see outside her protective smother, she could always equip them with these:

Spot on! Unfortunately this incident with the sign is indicative of how the American culture has become; it's always someone else's fault!
