Speaking of bagels and JoCo, has anyone tried the "Long Island Deli" (or whatever it's called, something similar) in Clayton? It's right where Main Street crosses Business 70.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We opted for cheesesteak at Anvils. Friendly and efficient staff. However we will not return. In our opinion the cheesesteak was not worh the price and we have even found better ones at a local American Hero. We keep looking for one that rivals Pat's, Geno's and Sonny's in Philly. Just our opinion but based on the number of diners today Anvils is well liked. Once again, thanks for the suggestions.

We felt the same way about Anvil's - my DH has spent a lot of time in Philly over the years and he was not pleased with Anvil's. I'm not that picky but I didn't get the attraction either. However, we appear to be in the minority on this issue

They ("Long Island Deli") get their bagels from somewhere in Raleigh/Cary. Worth the drive to Big Steve's- I-40 and Hwy 210.

I've eaten there twice when in the area. Their reuben gets 7.5/10. I also had the "wiseguy" which is roast beef and really good. Friendly staff. Have not tried the bagels, cheesesteak or pizza.

No offense, but we went to Big Steve's bagels on the way to Wilmington today and the bagels were OK at best, and their bread looked great, but was not good at all. I've had good bagels in NY, and these weren't even as good as Breugger's. Nice place, people were friendly, so I hate to talk bad, but the bagels (tried several kinds, we're just lacking in flavor and were tough).

I also want to make a comment regarding people badmouthing chains. I feel so many people have an asthetic and psychological love for "small shops" that often clouds their judgement. Kind of like how a sandwich made for you tastes better than one you make yourself! People knock chains like Jersey Mikes, just because they are a chain, but if you blind taste tested people I bet Jerey Mikes would beat out a lot of shops around town that people consider to be better. I am not at all saying they are the best, they are not, but they are definitely above average IMHO and should not be frowned upon just for being a chain. Just some food for thought, pun intended.

I totally agree with this post.

We have a regular poster here who is from NYC/Long Island - he says when people visit from NY, he tells them about this awesome place that makes fabulous NYstyle bagels. Then he goes to Bruegger's, puts the bagels in a plain brown bag and brings them home, where they are greeted with rave reviews from the NYers.

A lot of this is very much psychological. I happen to like Jersey Mike's sandwiches a lot. The bread isn't too hard, they don't put 4 inches of meat on the sandwich, and I like the shredded lettuce. A lot of other people might not like that mix of textures, and that's fine, but doesn't really have anything to do with whether a plcae is a chain. It reminds me of when I was pregnant - we lived in NY, and the deli near our house always had a freshly roasted turkey to make sandwiches with. I don't know why, but the idea of fresh turkey made my stomach turn. I only wanted the Boar's Head cold cuts! Sometimes things defy explanation.
