not sure it's been completely verified but some news is reporting that he worked for a reputable reptile rescue, helped with snake research and was very experienced handling them.
I'm sorry to hear he was injured and hope he's on the mend.
I heard that too but the fact remains you do not keep such a snake in a residence. And people who make their living handling such animals often fall into the trap of thinking the animal can be tamed or trained. Unless it has its fangs removed your life is in danger every time you handle it. The odds don't go down the more you do it.
My understanding is that most hospitals stock the anti-venom that treats snake bites by the species found in North America. The one in SC had the anti-venom for cobras.
can only imagine what the cost is going to be for his treatment ..... from what I understand snake antivenom can be very expensive and many doses are needed to neutralize ..... add in a week in intensive care and someone is probably out 100k

Well, they had to send a helicopter to get it here. So that alone has to be close to five figures I would think.
I actually know this guy. And yes, he is very experienced with snakes, and is active part of the Reptile Rescue of North Carolina. My understanding is he had North Carolina permits for the snakes, but venomous snakes are banned by a local Orange County ordinance.
In the couple times I've hung out with him I can say he is a nice guy and very passionate about animals. I know people have set up a gofundme account to help him with his medical bills.
I drove by his house on 54 this afternoon with ALL the area news crew vans surrounding it (that's how I knew it was his house and I recognized it from WTVD's site).

Gonna be at least that - I seem to remember a story about a man who was treated at WakeMed for a copperhead bite to the tune of $90K - and this guy may yet be facing an amputation.

Won't matter, he won't have to pay it. People very rarely pay their massive medical bills.
