I have yet to see a hummingbird in my yard or at my feeders. West Cary. I think it's because the house finches have discovered the wonders of sugar water and have been draining my feeders.

This morning I was mentioning to my husband that I have not seen any hummingbirds yet - I wonder why? Western side of Cary too.

I was told once by a birder that hummingbirds start hitting the feeders regularly after the nesting season...July or so. I found that to be true at my Raleigh feeders. I hung a nectar station last week at my new location in Brunswick Co. I haven't seen any birds yet.

Last year was my first year with a hummingbird feeder, so I hope that is the case and they will be coming around at some point.

I guess for now I'll continue to let the Finches drain my feeder! This is the first year I've seen them do this.

What kind of feeder do you use? I use the saucer style feeders. I've never had a problem with house finches as their bill seems to be too large to get to the nectar...plus I only fill my feeders about half full.

I hope so too. I'm really hoping they start showing up pretty soon. I've noticed several of my new neighbors have feeders out already, but I haven't any birds there either. I check for them often as I drive slowly by.

I realized last week thatI need to switch to a saucer type. I have the one that has 4 flower-like feeders attached to a glass bottle. Never had a finch issue until this year, which I guess is because the hummingbird feeder is near my finch sock.

I've had hummingbirds at my feeder for a few weeks now, it is about 2 feet away from a normal song bird feeder and they both hit them at the same time no problemo. I also have a few hummingbird flowers below the feeder. I may have some nests around though as it seems they fly into nearby trees after almost every time.

I think switching to a saucer feeder should fix the problem. I like them also because the hummingbirds will sit to feed on the perch around the outside which is fun to watch.
