Closings
Two Golden Corral closings – 1420 E. Broad Street in Fuquay Varina and 7224 Alford Hwy in Holly Springs. Surprisingly, there are still 40 locations sprinkled throughout North Carolina. Thanks to Chris Creighton for the tip.
Over in Cary at the Shoppes of Kildaire, reader Jeanette Hauser notified us that Hurricane Grill has closed.
Also in Cary, reader Donnie Darr informed us that Ledo Pizza on High House Road closed.

The steakhouse buffet segment seems to be struggling. Hopefully Golden Corral can hang in there. Already most Ryan's locations have closed, and other chains have declined or disappeared such as Quincy's, Western Sizzlin, Western Steer, Sizzler, Ponderosa, and Bonanza. Hopefully Golden Corral can hang in there. They used to be really good, but i have not dined there recently.
Also I wish Shoney's could revitalize. They used to be a dominant famiily diner restaurant throughout the Southeast. I liked them best way back when they were the southern Big Boy franchise. In Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana, Frisch's Big Boy still remains popular and is currently revitalizing. And there is still the main Big Boy chain in Michigan and Bob's Big Boy in California. I would like to see a Big Boy franchise return to the Carolinas, as well as Shoney's make a comeback. But sadly most Shoney's seem to be closing these days.
It's a shame. All those places that you list are my kind of places. The food wasn't very expensive, it was tasty enough, and you'd always leave full.
I'm from the northeast, where the Big Boy franchise broke off to Eat n' Park. Those are also excellent family restaurants. You don't see anything really like those out here.

I mean considering Golden Corral is headquartered in Raleigh on Glenwood Ave, I doubt they'd be willing to kill them in their own backyard very quick.
I'm not a huge fan of Golden Corral but hubby likes to go once a year.
So...once a year I go but only to the GC on Glenwood Avenue.
That GC is clean and the buffets look nice, no food slopped all over the place. No, I'm not worried about germs but I do like my food to look appealing!
I used to work at GC in the late 80's/ear/y 90's and it was TOTALLY different. It was a steak house with a salad bar, "potato bar" for baked potato fixins and a small amount of deserts. Their food was pretty good back then!
I worked there circa 1985. I remember that! The food was better. I worked at the one at Tower Shopping Center. I mean, this was back when most people considered that a decent area and Tower was building new shops and such.

You would think being right down the street from GC headquarters and many of their executives dining there it would be their flagship. Not the case with NC Sanitation Grades. In November 2014 I scheduled a private luncheon at GC, Glenwood. I was appalled to see their NC Sanitation Grade of 86. Since then they have had a couple of 91's. Currently 96. But will all the items on their buffet it is hard to keep food temperatures at acceptable levels.
The germophobia has real life repurcussions. Potentially tied to drug resistant viruses due to over use of antibiotics and antibacterials. May be leading to kids being born with allergies (the immune system needs germs / viruses to build immunity). Mothers need to pass antibodies to their unborn children. On the GC thing ... I agree the food quality has gone down.
