In my opinion, the best places for seafood are the hole-in-the-wall places like Anet's Ketch in Knightdale and Jack's Seafood in Raleigh.
I've enjoyed Shucker's Oyster Bar and Grill in Wake Forest and there are a few places in Raleigh/Cary that I am aware of but have not tried.
42nd Street Oyster Bar - I've been and it was ok, not the best I've had but nothing wrong with it.
Backfinn's Crab House - Also in Wake Forest, reminds me a bit of Joes from glancing at the photo and concept.
Bonefish Grill (multiple locations) - usually pretty good but more upscale than Joe's Crab Shack
Tony's Oyster Bar in Cary - have not tried
Full Moon Oyster Bar in Morrisville - have not tried
Shuckin Shack Oyster Bar in Cary - have not tried
Shuckers in Wake Forest or 42nd Street in Raleigh are my favorites!
I have discovered the BEST crab cakes in the area...J. Alexander's at Crabtree has crabcakes that have so many lumps of crab and so little breading that the minute you cut into one, they just fall apart! They are delicious.
Coming in second would be Bonefish Grill and Sullivan's for lump crab cakes.
Isn't there some sort of crab pot place up in Durham?
Googled it and came up with The Saucy Crab. It is off 15-501 in Durham.
Never been, but the pictures kind of look like a Joe's CS type of place.
Not a fan of the seafood restaurant at The Farmer's Market
