I thought I read in the WSJ that California has a budget surplus?

they are projecting a budget surplus, if the Democratic-controlled state legislature approves the budget that is proposed.

Of course, in spite of the budget surplus (which is only a projection, they had to correct themselves after the fact and announce a deficit only last year)..they still don't actually work to reduce the massive debt of the state. Next time they're hit by a recession, they're gonna sit on a lot of public spending and may have a genuine crisis on their hand.

California would give free healthcare to ILLEGAL immigrants which would cost the state 3 billion dollars. If people want to move from California that is great. Please leave this thinking and thought process behind with you. Don't worry about the 1.5 trillion in debt, just pile it on and let the next generation worry about it.

I'm not an economist or have anything to do with financials or budgets. I do know that debt like this is not sustainable. Not for a state or a country. At what point does this end? When does this collapse?

I am an economist who does health care research at a major university in the state. Undocumented immigrants do pay for their healthcare, through the income, property, and sales taxes that they pay. So no, they don't get their healthcare for free. Funny how the GOP only worries about the debt when Dems are in leadership. I wonder when Fox Business will get around to writing an article about the annual trillion dollar plus deficits that are being projected thanks to the recent Trump/GOP tax cuts that overwhelmingly went to corporations and the richest few.

An inconvenient truth for the Fox News crowd. Not to mention the jobs they do that keep the economy moving when no one else will.

I think people often overlook the amount of money spent by undocumented immigrants on stuff like sales and property taxes... money they cannot get back on income taxes, because they cannot file a return and do not qualify for stuff like child tax credits and the like.

How do illegals pay taxes when they are paid cash and dont file tax returns? Most rent homes as well since it's hard to get a loan without documents.

Richest few? Im middle class and my taxes would have gone down $4,000 that I paid in. Tax plan seems to work really well for many people.

Turn off CNN please.

I know lots of people willing to do that line of work but cannot compete with illegals because they are paid significantly less. Those jobs sure help the economy

Renters pay property tax.

They don't pay FICA or federal/local taxes though.
