I think there are a lot of towns in the Triangle that meet that criteria. I would say Chapel Hill and Carrboro for sure (they are pretty much the same town as far as day to day living in them goes). Chapel Hill has a fantastic library and independent bookstore. Carrboro has a great local health food coop store, Weaver Street Market.

You can find all those things in Durham or Raleigh too.

Hillsborough also has a cute bookstore (Purple Crow) and a branch of Carrboro’s Weaver Street Narket. It’s a very cute historic town that is becoming more popular.

Carrboro by far...distant "Second" would be pockets of Durham.

Y'all folks who are saying "Carrboro" do know that there is NOT a bookstore in Carrboro, right? That's one of the things the OP asked for. Also not a "natural pet product store". Both of those are in Chapel Hill. I think for the specific things that the OP asked for:
Quote:
good bookstores, organic food stores, natural pet product stores, natural health providers (massage, acupuncture, etc.), yoga/pilates/tai chi studios, mostly independent restaurants vs chains, farmers markets, and always has things going on - festivals, outdoor concerts, etc.?
... of the two, Chapel Hill is a better fit, since it has everything on their list, but in reality, living here Chapel Hill and Carrboro function as one community for day to day living. They have separate town governments and police forces, but a unified school system. We live in Chapel Hill, our kids went to Carrboro Elementary. I am in both towns daily and shop in both towns regularly.

The parts of Chapel Hill adjacent to downtown Carrboro are really all the same character wise - just different towns.

Carrboro, but not for long.

Some people in Carrboro want to change the town's name, according to town officials.
Carrboro is named for Julian Carr, a white supremacist who gave a fiery speech
at the dedication of the Silent Sam statue in 1913.

Gee, I wonder if the town is going to refund the money that Julian Carr gave! History is the PAST. How can we change the PAST? We can't but we can learn from it.

In answer to the OP's question...#1 would be Carrboro and #2 would be Chapel Hill!

People need to get a grip. I understand a lot of the name stuff and the way they want that, but ffs you can't re-write history. Change a town name, sheesh. Get a life and do something productive with it.

The Board of Aldermen decided against renaming the town, saying it would be too complicated and costly. Instead, a group will gather this month to start working on a "Truth Plaque" that will acknowledge the town's history while also affirming its commitment to working for social justice.
