Publix and Lowes Foods also have good cinnamon rolls as well as whole foods. If you looking for something less sweet La Farms are okay(taste more like some brioche bread with a light coating of cinnamon to me).
Panera - Their dough is decent but the icing seems a bit "grainy" in texture like they used granulated sugar instead of confectioner's sugar to make the icing. A bit heavy on the icing, but of course you can manually address that.
Carolina Glazed donuts - A more "unique" offering. They use the doughnut dough and cook it like a donut. Not what I was looking for...but it was decent in so far as a light (donut style) glazing but not enough cinnamon and of course I was hoping for more of a traditional cinnamon roll.
Crema Coffee Roaster & Bakery - These have cream cheese icing. While they looked fantastic (the rise on the dough, the appearance of being baked just right), I cannot stand cream cheese and so I passed on this one. Had an apple turnover and a coffee instead.
Someone mentioned making them myself and several posters point to grocery stores: My SO is currently trying to avoid sweets, so if I can get one for myself that is great but if I bring home a box of them (or make a batch) I would not be doing them any favors.
I look forward to trying the cinnamon rolls at Common Grounds and hope they don't have cream cheese icing.
A person after my own heart! I love to try out Cinnamon Rolls! Try out Sunrise Biscuits in Chapel Hill. They are only open in the morning, but they make a good roll.
You can also try out Time Out in Chapel Hill. They have large and small ones.
I actually prefer them from T.DiStefanos in Mebane, but that is a little far to go all the time. In a pinch I get them from Harris Teeter. You can get them plain or with different icings. They do sell out quickly though, so go in the morning.
I haven't tried cinnamon rolls at either of these yet, but their other offerings are delicious, and the cinnamon rolls look good:
Chanticleer at the corner of Tryon and Cary Parkway; and
Mama Bird's Cookies and Cream in Holly Springs (they also have a location in Morgan St Food Hall, but not sure if they have cinnamon rolls there - I think they only have cinnamon rolls on weekends - and maybe only Sundays - in Holly Springs.)
The best cinnamon rolls I have ever had (they even beat my mom's homemade!) are at Groovy Duck in Raleigh. They only have them on Saturdays, and sometimes don't have them even then, so I would call ahead, but they are so so good.
Thanks for an update! Give Whole Foods a try though, they’re selling single rolls, not the whole box if that’s a concern. At least the one in Cary does.
NYC deli famous for their babkas. Also in chocolate.
Don't forget to take a number at the counter
You can't beat a Babka
