I'm looking to replace my modem and wireless router that I use for my spectrum internet service. Both are pretty old and its time for some new equipment. What do you use at home? What do you recommend? My needs are pretty basic. We pay around $50/month for internet, just have one laptop and stream to one TV using a firestick and just want to make sure my equipment is up to date to optimize things. Thanks for the help!

How big is your home? Do you have/want to avoid wifi dead spots?

For your modem I would go with either of the below options, they have you covered out to 600Mbps speed plans

Motorola MB7621
Arris Surfboard SB6183

As for the router. It sounds like your utilization is fairly low and assuming you don't need wifi splashed far and wide (and thus don't need a mesh system)

On the super cheap side:
TP-Link Archer A7

Little More Expensive:
TP-Link Archer C2300
ASUS AC2900

Mesh System:
TP-Link Deco
Google WiFi
Netgear Orbi
eero

All are fine options.

Thanks, that is very helpful. It's a two story 1,400 sq/ft home. Dead spots have not been a huge issue in the past. Thanks again!

Get your $150 router at Costco; no hassle on returns....took mine back after 3 years. Full refund.

Modem is "free" from Spectrum with their Internet service.

we have an Orbi which has solved most of our problems. Not with my Mac, which I was gonna get rid of and finally did after I spilled water on it. I can (and do) use my work internet to alleviate some of the pressure on the home internet.

I bought an Arris 6700-AC off eBay. They are in the $30-$50 range shipped on eBay.

It's a combo WiFi router and modem and I have it set to a cheap timer to reset and do a depower/repower in the early morning. But even without doing that it still works great, it's just an extra insurance policy.

Internet speeds are fast and have had absolutely zero issues with it, maybe a handful due to Spectrum being down at the time.

My wife WFH with video calls, we stream media/TV, have WiFi cameras, VOIP phone, the whole nine.

It does sit in the middle of our house, which is open. If you have a single story home with it placed on the far end, you may need a repeater, but that might go for any router.

Good bang for the buck.

I dislike using company equipment, it's a hassle to return, and I like my own stuff, personally.

I am hoping that the returned modem was actually defective and this was not an abuse of Costco's gracious policy.

Otherwise, things like this just make it worse for everybody with increased prices and more restrictions in the long run.

How did you rationalize getting a refund?
