Geez, I'm not even in the Real Estate biz and I can whip off several gated communities in North Raleigh without thinking too hard...
Linville (as mentioned)
The Barony
Southern Hills Estates
Bay Leaf Farm
Greywalls at Trego
Adams Mountain
Now, the first five consist almost entirely of $1M homes and UP. But Adams Mountain is one that might fit the OP's price range. It's an older, gated community that does have some homes I'd estimate to be as low as $550 - $600K..
I have driven through Adams Mountain and Greywalls with no gate issues.
I don't like the location of The Barony gate on that rise on Creedmoor Road with limited visibility and traffic moving through fast.
Having lived in California myself, I wouldn't worry too much about the gated communities. There are plenty of very safe neighborhoods in Wake County. I'd suggest looking at the crime maps by the addresses of houses you like.
We have tons of Indians here, as well as a decent amount of other Asians.

That seems to be true of a lot of neighborhoods I see with gatehouses. It makes you wonder what the point of them is.

The Barony does have the second gate that is egress only further down the hill. But with traffic, it is still a bit risky for my taste. Creedmoor is also going to be widened to a 4 lane divided road at some point - it's already in the plans to do that, though plans keep getting pushed out. $1.5+ million a lot of money to spend on a neighborhood that will deal with that kind of road noise, when there are other (possibly better) options out there.

Having spent some time shuttling people back and forth in and out of one that appeared to be unmonitored, I can tell you that they were monitored at certain hours. This was near Ft Bragg so everyone seemed to be leaving and arriving at the same times. If you wanted in after hours, there was a guard but the gates to leave and the gates to enter at certain times were left up.
It is cost prohibitive to turn an entire neighborhood into a place that has security rivaling a Federal Installation.
As an aside... How is the racism in the area toward chinese/asian people, in your observation? If you're asian too, have you personally experienced any sort of racism? (This is being asked honestly, since the city I grew up and where I live currently is 40% Asian and 40% White... Not sure what to expect in a brand new area with such a low asian population)
I am white. My husband is Chinese from Malaysia, US Citizen. I've never heard him tell stories about racism. We've been here almost 12 years. When we walk in our neighborhood, most people are friendly (Brier Creek). We've been to various places outside of Raleigh (Pittsboro, Selma) and he's never mentioned anything, and I've never noticed a negative reaction from other people.
