I haven been thinking about moving to wake forest and have done tons of research, including reading the threads here, but the one thing that I forgot to research is the health care. I am planning on having my second baby once I move down there so it will be important to have a hospital nearby. I know Wake County has some of the best medical facilities around but are any of them near where I am looking to relocate? Other items of importance is a good Ob/Gyn and a pediatrician for my 2yo daughter.

Thanks!

Northern Wake Medical Center is a fairly new hopital and added 24 hr emergency care in 2005 I believe. It is just down the road from wake forest, within a 15 minute drive depending on the part of town. Here is the link.

One of the oddest things I had to adjust to moving down here is that every little town doesn't have it's own hospital. I honestly hadn't thought of if when we bought (no reason for it to come up for us) and has just 'assumed'. (We all know where that gets you!)

However, there are several within a short drive and OB/GYNS in town as well, though most seem to go into Raleigh. Our Ped is in North Raleigh and it isn't bad at all.

Up until the 80s or so most hospitals (except university-run) were County Hospitals. And thus they usually were put in the County Seat. (Which is Raleigh, in this case.) And in most counties, the county seat is the largest town anyways so it worked out well that way.

You look at the state-wide DOT road map, and you'll notice the little black diamond that represents a county seat town is usually in the same place as the little blue asterisk that represents a major hospital.

Ok, so I can live in WF and have my drs in North Raleigh and it won't be a far drive? I just don't want to get down there and then regret it because of poor planning on my part. There are just so many factors to take into consideration when you move to another state. Another factor is the schools and from what I hear they are terribly overcrowded. I obviously want to live in a good school system since my dd will be school age in a few years. I am hoping that by then there will be some new schools but I know I can't count on that. Year round schooling doesn't really bother me so if that's my only option then I think I can live with it.

I don't find it a bad drive at all....especially if you will be a SAHM and not have to worry about going to rush-hour.

And yes, the schools are over-crowded, but I wouldn't say 'terribly' quite yet.....at least not the ones in Wake Forest. (The high school is the worst.) Wake County just based a new bond issue....there are building 17 new schools in the coming few years, and planning (land purchase etc) for 13 more after that.

Have you been down here yet?

Yeah, I heard about the bonds. They definitely need to keep up with population growth and without raising property taxes the bonds are probably the next best thing. I know it's a bit of a point of contention but I am glad they are finding money to fund more schools. Luckily I won't have to worry about high school for a while. Hopefully by time my dd is that age there will be more choices. I can move there knowing that they are trying to keep pace with the influx of people.

That's a good point about not having to drive during rush hour. I am a SAHM so I can pretty much go whenever I want. But mostly I like to know that when I go into labor I won't have to drive 40 mins to the nearest hospital.

Yes, my husband and I were in WF in August. As it turns out my husband's boss' wife, (they live in Cary, btw) is a realtor and was more than happy to show us around. She showed us some houses in North Raleigh and some houses in Crescent Ridge in Wake Forest. I would have liked to explore more of WF but it was getting late and we had to drive back to Cary then back to Goldsboro where we were visiting my husband's family. Last December when we were there for the holidays we saw some houses in Clayton. Once my husband finds a job that allows us to relocate we will come back down and look around more thoroughly.

You also have certified nurse midwives (CNM) and pediatric nurse practitioners (PNP) to choose from.......

Not everyone if comfortable with midwives and most responsible ones do transfer patients to a hospital when things do not go as easily as planned.

Yes, and......... Some newcomers may not know that CNMs are available as a choice and that they work in collaboration with obstetricians.
