Hi Folks,
This is my first posting, but I've been a fan of this Forum since I discovered it a few weeks ago.
During the past 3 years, my family has visited friends in North Raleigh twice. They all told us we ought to pack up and move south. After months of wavering back and forth, we've decided to take the plunge and relocate from Boston to Raleigh.
My question today concerns the schools. The explosive growth of Wake district's student population has been well publicized. According to statistics I've seen, the student / teacher ratio has only climbed a bit in the past 3 years, but statistics can often hide to truth.
Can some parents or teachers of elementary school children give us an idea of how crowded the classrooms are? Has the infux of kids impacted a teacher's ability to spend time with each student?
I've also heard that a portion of the classes are held in "temporary" classrooms, where facilities are not as good as the classrooms within the school buiding itself. It would be great if you can share your experiences.
Thanks!

^I imagine people have plenty of insight on this...particularly those who have kids....but they're probably just tired of writing about it, since this question comes up sometimes as often as twice a week. Try scrolling thru the other threads and you might find more info.

That's right, Rob.
It seems this forum is ready for a sticky post "Use the Search function first." Of course, I don't think "Search Functions" get utilized much on sites that have them.

Ddin't mean to beat a dead horse. Like I said, I'm new to discussion boards of any kind. Didn't realize I can search on a topic. I'll give it a try.

Don't worry about that...but please do come back if you have specific questions. There is normally someone around that had experience with most of the schools.

Over all though, there is an overcrowding issue that is being addressed with 19 new schools. The trailers that are in use are very nice (roomy, airy, well maintained, fully climate controlled) and most teachers and kids don't mind them at all.

Hey, I understand, I too was on this board for a few months before I realized/understood about the search function. So your doing well!

But, so far (new to area) I've have found the schools my kids attend (in apex/cary) to be very organized, helpful & willing to help my child(ren) in any area needed. Wake Co. covers a lot of schools, so, I'm sure someone can comment on particular school(s) once you narrow down to a specific area.

I moved to Knightdale form WV about 1 1/2 years ago. My wife and I are starting to like the area alot now but since we were from a really small town, it took some adjustments.
The schools my children go to both have the 'modular classrooms' (one in elementary and one in middle) but I don't think it affects their education in any way. The ratio seems to be about 22 to 25 students per teacher and I have found the school system very easy to work with if I had questions. The teachers that I have met are very proficient and seem to take an honest interest in my children's edication. The one thing we weren't expecting was that the school system here is on a faster pace and somewhat advanced from where we came from. My youngest started here after about 2 months of first grade teaching from WV and it became apparent that we were really, really far behind in Wake County. He worked hard the rest of the year and got caught up and is now towards the top of his class in second grade.
Now that they are trying to start the year- round programs I'm not sure I'm happy with them anymore. I understand the need but I'm not crazy about it. I'll have the youngest in track and the oldest on standard. We briefly considered moving to Johnston County.
