Absolutely no regrets about moving here from the Northeast. I think ideally I might like living in Virginia - maybe Richmond/Charlottesville (a little closer shot to Washington DC and the northeast corridor) but aside that, the weather here is great, people are nice and there's enough going on to keep me happy.
Originally from eastern PA, and I've bounced around every major part of this country for school and/or work, except for the Pac Northwest. When you factor in quality of life/cost of living, it's hard to beat here. The kicker is that there are so many transplants and internationals here, the cultural differences can be as big or as little as you prefer.
Every area or region has it's upsides and downsides. The only glaring downside that I can think of is that Wake County Schools are a shtshow. But the upsides outweigh it.
As much as I like the Triangle, Wilmington is where my, and my wife's heart is. As soon as we could, we will make the move down I-40.
I've only been here a few months (since late August) and so far, the humidity has been so horribly intolerable that I'm having a hard time appreciating anything. Even when it's a perfect 72 degrees I start sweating after 5 minutes outside and after a rain, I feel like I've walked into a sauna. Does it ever get better? I don't mean the humidity, which I'm sure will only worsen over the years as global warming proceeds, I mean one's tolerance for the endless heat? Like, will I some day walk out into the 90&90 (90F, 90%) and say, "ah, what a lovely summer day, good time for a walk?"
I thought it was great today, but I like it warm. Been too a little too cold in recent weeks for me. This is probably not the place for you if you don't like heat and humidity. Sounds like you weren't even here for most of the summer.

Really nice days this week even though I prefer the summer weather. Not too humid for me at all. Started getting a little cool around 8pm.
Yeah, around 80 is about perfect for me and I don't like it super dry like it gets in winter. I get really dry skin then. Give me a little heat and humidity.

Well I am looking at the temps for today and it says 57 degrees around noon but humidity at 84%. Boo! I 'm ready for some crisp cool fall temps. Nothing worse than a warm muggy Halloween or god forbid, even worse, a stuffy muggy Thanksgiving. It's annoying because on cooler days when one would want to open a door or window, it just lets stuffy air into the house which my dehumidifiers must then work overtime to deal with.

I have lived in the south now for 22 years and yes you do get used to it. I cannot stand to be indoors very much, and we just find a shady wooded spot to walk in almost every day, and then come back home to AC. Much prefer the heat and humidity to snow and ice. I cannot bear the cold.
I wish you the best in dealing with the Triangle's long stretch Summer Hot-midity. Bottom line, it depends on the person; body type, in shape/out of shape, weight, body mass, age, ethnicity, gender, health issues (if any) as to whether one could ever "get used " to the southeastern humid climate. Originally from NJ; I lived in the triangle for 5 years, but never got used to it. NC typical mid 90 degree summer days with dewpoints running in at times up to mid 70's are brutal, and for some people; near impossible to bear with. I have since moved to Central VA (Richmond/ Fredericksburg) where the summers can also hot and humid, but slightly more tolerable to deal with at night.
It really got tiring for me, feeling like I was standing/sitting/walking in a hot steamy shower, after being outside for just a couple of minutes before getting into, or just getting out of an air conditioned car.
The thick jelly like morning NC dew covering my car every morning was a stark reminder that Carolina summers are much harsher than Northeastern US summers. Dreaded knowing that the hostile smoldering climate would require one having to take multiple short breaths (due to asthma) instead of one long breath when breathing in the super saturated air in Cary for 100 or more days and nights of the year.
At least the fall months and winters were mild.
