We had a family living in the back of our stove. I don't recommend the humane traps. We used them and the mice kept coming back (we never did find where they were coming in, even after using two cans of that foam stuff). Dh would drive them several towns over and then a day or two later they'd be back in the traps. I finally got smart enough to paint their backs with nail polish, so it definitely was the same family. Ultimately we went the non-humane route, and never had another mouse in the house. Oh, and they loved the peanut butter and ignored the cheese.

Mice can carry alot of diseases and I don't think I would mess around with humane anything. And I'm a big animal lover. I would just want to get rid of whatever it is right away. They reproduce quickly and can get through the tiniest places imaginable. They can shimmy thru paper thin crevices. That exterminator doesn't know what he is talking about.

This is so interesting to read. I just moved here, into my new place, and I have the same droppings. I appreciate all of the great suggestions. We did put out traps for a couple of nights, and nothing happened. I kept waiting for the loud snapping noise at 3 AM I am going to keep putting out those traps. The critter (I think it is a mouse after reading this) did something even weirder than shredding toilet paper. It ate the top of the nipple of my baby's bottle!

This is mice, without seeing the dropping I can not be positive, but I work with mice for a living. Sounds like em.

funny thing about mice droppings. I was at my 28 year old son's apt when I noticed what I thought was marijuana seeds on his coffee table. I knew his best buddy had been in town and I decided not to say anything. After all he is an adult and can make his own choices. next day I was there again and noticed even more in the kitchen. "Darn why are they rolling in the kitchen by the toaster oven?" I thought.

Finally I said something to him about why there were so many seeds around his apartment. His eyes got W I D E and then he said. "So that is what is making all the mess and noises at night. I've got mice".
He knew he had one mouse and was humanely trying to catch him with some hairbrained idea about having him spill into a basket from the counter and then he was gonna release him.
He now realizes you never have just one mouse, his mom is pretty cool and trying to trap and realease a mouse is not wise.
