What are the smoking laws in public places in NC? Are there different ordinances for each town/city?
Where I'm living now there is NO smoking in public practically EVERYWHERE. I've grown quite accustomed to being able to go nearly anywhere and not have to worry about smoke in your face.
Well to put it in perspective, they didn't outlaw smoking in the State's General Assembly government building until a year or two ago. That said, I believe there is a movement to ban smoking in public places indoors but I really doubt that it will pass since we're a major producer of tobacco. Smoking in public is normal as is smoking in bars and restaurants. You will find a few places that have a no smoking policy but usually you'll have to actively seek these places out.
Since I rarely go anywhere not "kid friendly" these days (and thereby smoke free), I don't see the smoke, but there are definitely more smokers here than in AZ, where we moved from. We almsot never saw them in Tucson, so when we moved here, my kids would yell "Mommy look! A SMOKER!! HE MAKES BAD CHOICES!!" Usually this would be yelled within about a foot of the smoker. Oops!
I will say that every time it happened, the smoker would agree it was a bad choice!

What are the laws in the area?
Thanks.
Well....this is part of Tobacco Road.....they aren't likely to ban it like they should anytime soon.
However, I notice that smoke isn't always bad in some places....you just have to figure out which places have decent ventilation systems and a clientele that aren't all heavy smokers.
A bill to ban smoking in public places (except private clubs and other such establishments) was just shot down by the House about a week or so ago. I'm hoping that something gets passed at the very least for establishments that made a certain percentage of profit from food, I think that is pretty fair.
Besides being generally annoying, secondhand smoke really gives me breathing problems and burns my eyes, making it very unpleasant to spend time in places where there is heavy smoke. I vote with my feet and don't go to those places very often, if at all. I just can't physically tolerate it.

Tobacco use laws are statewide only. County & municipal governments are not permitted to pass their own restrictions without state approval. However, private businesses and other privately-owned concerns may restrict or ban tobacco use on their property, and many have. Around 23% of North Carolinians smoke.

I guess it depends on which restaurant you go to if you notice the smoke. I have crossed a few places off my list. I came from Mass where you couldn't smoke anywhere but especially schools and many places that kids would be. Now I am deep in baseball with my son and am amazed at how many people smoke around the kids. I have seen coaches smoking and/or using chewing tobacco right in the dugout when the kids were right there. Not a great example to be setting.
NC = puff puff puff cough cough cough wheeze wheeze wheeze hack hack hack....need I say more? Oh yeah, the food in many restaurants tastes like Marlboro Lights!
Amazing, they have "dry counties", can't buy alcohol until 2pm on Sunday but you can light up in many restaurants......
