I took these pictures a few weeks ago while walking through Oakwood on a Sunday afternoon. This Grocery store is located at 701 E. Lane Street. Is it still open? I'm guessing it is since it looks to be in good shape and still has an ice bin, vending machine, and garbage cans out front. How long has it been around? Was a different business before? I've been researching the property online but haven't turned up much. Any history would be greatly appreciated!
Afraid I can't help. But, the Pine State signs are interesting! I moved here in mid 70's and remember Pine State milk, but their signage was orange - I thought?
I don't know the history, but it IS still open, run by an older couple. My friend lives a couple of houses up from it and we've sent the kids there for milk before.
I really don't know much about the store other than to say that my mama would have skinned my hide had she caught me over in that neighborhood growing up

I know a guy with the answer. I'll get back with the scoop when I get up with him

It was a very different Oakwood 50 years ago. Yes there were some prominent Raleigh families living there, but it also was in decline. A lot of those large homes had already turned into boarding houses and apartment houses. One could easily find a liquor house or gambling table in Oakwood. It had a reputation to some of "nothing but trouble" when I was a kid. Now keep in mind that I wasn't aware of all this at the time, but concerned parents did. Anyway, Oakwood was outside our boundary of places we could get caught hanging out. We had own little stores to buy drinks and candy, and I played by the rules if I knew what was good for me

Like Poggly said, back then, you just didn't hang out in that part of downtown, period. And even today, right around the corner from that store is fairly edgy. As I mentioned, I have a friend who lives a couple of houses away from that store and that particular street in Oakwood is sort of on the fringes on the neighborhood. Just one block south and you will find tons of drugs and prostitution. Take a drive down E Lane Street tonight around midnight!
