Maybe there should be a "single retired relocating" thread! That is me, too! I was born and raised in Sioux Falls, and it has grown and changed a great deal. I now live in central SD, simply because 2 of my kids and 7 of my 8 grandkids live here. But there is nothing for me to do here, and very few singles my age. I am a writer so would like to find an area that has others, like a writer's group. I like smaller towns, but want to be within 1 hour of major airline and excellent healthcare. I am considering relocating to Mitchell SD, a closer move, 1 hour from Sioux Falls, but airline connections in SF are very expensive. I think Rapid is about the same. The Black Hills area is beautiful and there are writers and artists there. My niece and her husband are educators there. I also want to be in a "horsey" area so I could get another horse or find others so I could lease one, and have people to ride with. I've also been expanding my search to the Denver metro outlying area, Omaha area, and Mankato MN (where I have good friends). This discussion has been helpful to me, wonder if anyone has any updates?
Are you sure there's no VA in Rapid City? I thought my dad was in and out of one before he died. He's buried in Rapid City. I know from all I hear about the VA and how bad they are, my mom thought this one took excellent care of him.
I don't know if it's still like this, but when I visited there in the 80s, no one ever locked their doors and I drove my parents crazy whenever they went shopping because I locked the car doors. They lived in Box Elder at the time.
There is no V A hospital in Rapid at this time. There is one in Sturgis and one in Hot Springs. The V A is considering closing the one in Hot Springs and moving most of those services to Rapid however that has been an ongoing proposal for quite a few years.
I like it. I retired to Hot Springs 5 years ago and am very happy with the area. Rapid is larger than Hot Springs, consequently it has more to offer in the way of business services and health care. I do not find it difficult to drive to Rapid every 4 to 6 wks for major shopping or a specialist appointment. Others would prefer to be in Rapid, rather than a smaller town. The Black Hills are not the Colorado Rockies, but I love them. The climate is mild and dry. Taxes, imho, are reasonable but others differ. You should do your own comparisons on that issue.
What are you looking for in a retirement community???
What are you looking for in a retirement community???
uh
I was in Hot Springs when I was about 10 yrs old. Traveled from MN via train with my Mom to visit my sister who was an RN at a Hospital there. I have fond memories of that visit even tho it is about 66 yrs ago.
I don't think my wife would like the drive back & forth from Hot Springs for Doctors etc. Don't get me wrong, I think HS is a nice place.
My wife & I live in a Retirement community for age 55 & over. The only one on the Western Slope. It is a nice place with both Patio homes & single family homes with currently 145 residences built and about another 65 to be built. We feel safe here and the weather isn't too bad. No tornadoes or other natural disasters. We don't get all the storms that you hear about in Denver (250 miles to the East of us) over the Continental Divide. We have good medical and not very much traffic.
The only thing we don't like now that we are getting up there in years is that our kids & grandkids live in MN where we came from and it is a long 2 day drive back there. Rapid City is easily a one day drive to the Mpls, & Rochester area. We hate the thought of moving back to MN for the Taxes there are ridiculously high. Sioux Falls is even closer but they are right in the storm path to MN.
Here is the url for the Rapid City Journal. rapidcityjournal.com | First. Best. In Up-To-The Minute Local News Go to the classified ads, then to homes for sale. You should be able to see if there is something you would like. There are retirement communities in and around Rapid, however I am not familiar with them. Rapid sounds like a good fit for you if you can find the house you want.
Thanks for the info.
I went to the web site to look at Homes for sale. Not much there unless one wants a very large home.
And then I clicked on the weather forecast. Wow! you are expecting 60 MPH winds . Just like Rochester, MN . We don't get any wind during the winter months. The little bit of snow that falls here comes down vertically. Spring winds might reach 20 or 30 MPH at the most.
My folks are in the list for West Hills retirement village. My house is close by, when they move I'll be able to check in on them. Also, it is close to the hospital and they have onsite facilities and care of all levels.
