I am just about to close on my new house, and I was wondering if it's customary to give your agent a gift once the deal is done. I've read that people sometimes do it, but what kind of gift is appropriate? Is it expected? She has been very good, and I would definitely recommend her to anyone. If it is customary, I would definitely do it. Just not sure what the protocol is. Any info or knowledge would be appreciated.

A car is always nice...couple of medium sized diamond studs?
If you liked the agent and felt you got service above and beyond the call of duty or such you can provide a minor gift....but you don't have to...your agent is generally quite well paid and happy with that.
Go for something personal if you feel the urge...but it is not required by the normal protocol.
My favorite gift from a client is a nice referral...
I would think your business was a gift to her and if she was good, refer her to future home buyers/sellers. I also received a gift basket from my real estate agent.
No one should ever EXPECT a gift, under any circumstances. It then becomes an entitlement.
If you really liked your agent, and you are a gift giver, go for it. It will feel good, and the agent will appreciate it.
It humbles me when clients do nice things for me. I try to earn it, but would never expect it.
(Coffee is a wonderful, wonderful thing, though. )
If you feel they did a really good job something small is perfectly acceptable but never expected. A hand shake, and "Thank you, I appreciated your help. If I have friends/family that will be buying or selling I'll get them in touch with you." is the best gift ever. (except for the car or diamonds that OleCap suggested)
My son's a real estate agent. He always buys a nice gift for the client when a house closes along with a thank you for their business. He's there to serve them, not the other way around. Your business and future referals are your gift.
Generally a closing gift is given from the Realtor to the client. However, I have had a couple of times when a client has offered a gift. It's vey thoughtful. Nothing of any value should be accepted by the Realtor. If you'd like give her a card, a bottle of wine or treat her to lunch.
