Isn't that the truth?!? Yeah, I have stuff down there I'll never use....so I keep it there, because I can't throw it away either. Antique chair from my grandma. Photos and momentoes from my deceased DH's childhood. (What DO you do with that? Throw it? Seems disrepectful, somehow, but at the same time, I don't really want it.....those are HIS high school memories, not mine. Heck, I don't even know most of the other people in the photos.)

Other than the household mechanicals, ninety percent of the stuff in my basement is irrelevant and could be tossed or donated to someone who would make good use of it. The rest could be stored in the garage or in a household closet. It's an inertia thing. I promise myself all the time that this will be the month that I finally deal with the stuff in the pit, but I can find all sorts of good reasons to avoid it. What really works? Moving. There's something about packing up the detritus of a life well lived that inspires action; it's called the moving company's estimate!

When I moved into my house a few months ago, I made sure that almost nothing made it down to the basement. Boxes of books did, because that's where I plan to set up bookshelves and unpack them. And a few extra pieces of furniture that I'm keeping because I have the room and that eventually a niece or my son will be able to use when they set up a place of their own.

But all the other boxes stayed out in the garage if they didn't go inside to a specific room. I haven't unpacked all of them yet, but I look at them every day, so they aren't out of sight, out of mind. I try to make a little progress every week, and that's working. If they were all down in the basement, I doubt I would have even touched any of them yet.
