I've seen this in a few new construction homes in my area. Is this a new trend? My girlfriend thinks it is stupid, but I think it is quite practical and convenient.

Thoughts?

It's not "new", per se. It's been going on about 10 years, just not possible in all floorplans. This is a great idea as long as there is also a door to the hallway. The way you wrote it, it sounds like it's actually in the closet, but I assume it's just connected to the closet.

I actually would love this, a small apartment-sized washer/dryer in the master but still have a full-size washer room. Especially if it's a two-story home with the master on the upper floor, like I have right now.

I've never seen that. I've seen upstairs laundry rooms but never in a master. And I've been in a lot of houses

I attached a picture of it.

Also, there is a full size laundry room upstairs with the 3 extra bedrooms; This is an "extra" laundry room.

Never seen it as an "extra". In the houses I've seen it in and the ones I've helped buyers build, it's a master downstairs with a full sized utility room connected to the master closet. Main utility room for the house.

I have a friend that has that setup.

The master is on the ground floor, and there is a full-size stacked W/D in the master closet.

All the other bedrooms (kids) are upstairs, where there is a traditional laundry room.

It's a nice set up as clothes don't have to be carried up/down stairs or very far at all.

As part of the hall bathroom perhaps or a closet off the hall.

I've seen master closets with doors that lead directly in to the laundry room, but never a laundry room actually in the closet.
I don't think I'd do it. My laundry room gets humid and warm.
Plus, what if you want to do laundry while your other half is sleeping? (This is a common occurrence in our house.)

In this particular house, there is still a door between the bathroom/closet and the bedroom, so I don't think that would be too much of an issue so long as the washer/dryer are not crazy loud.
