When there is a house on the market at the same price and nearby I'll show up at the open house to compare and see what they have done with the house to get ideas. I'm also selling in about 15 months and like to scout out agents. I signed in at the agent's request and told her I was just curious, lived down the street and not buying.
Today I got a very angry email from her asking me what I was doing going to her open house when I just bought my home less than a year and a half ago for about the same price. The email included my home address. She asked that I 'cease and desist' going to any of her open houses.
Freaked me out that she looked up my info and followed up on me. I know it's public info but I feel a little stalked.
It's not illegal, but is it ethical?
Think I found an overly agressive agent.
I think you found an agent to avoid. It happens.
And as petty, stupid, and short-sighted as the email was, there is nothing unethical about looking in public records.
You could always tell her you were scouting her out for down the road when you are planning to sell...and that she has blown it. That should make her wince!
That would make me want to go to ALL her open houses.
Seems like a waste of time on her part--open houses are open, to buyers, to curious neighbors, to people scouting for friends/relatives. She sounds like she has too much time on her hands.
I like Doing It's suggestion. If you really want it to sting, call her real estate company and tell them that you have been scouting out agents in your neighborhood for a future sale, and that if this is the way their employees treat prospective customers, then you will be looking elsewhere for representation and telling others to do the same.
