You don't sit IN a surf kayak..you sit on top...it's smaller, and flatter. And yes, you fall off...frequently! It's like surfing, but sitting on a kayak and paddling, rather than standing on a surfboard. It is fun...and we had a great time.
Ha, I suck at surfing! I never could paddle fast enough. I bet the kayak is fun, though.
My husband and I went out in Newport Harbor a few years ago (California), and we had our young son in a canoe. He must have been three or so, and of course we all had life jackets on. We were in the harbor, so the water was pretty calm, and when we were a ways out, our son started wiggling and wanting to look over the side. I was sitting in front and instinctively turned to grab him as he leaned over the side, and we tipped over into the drink. I was closer to our son, who despite his life jacket, ended up eye-deep in the water ... he just instinctively held his breath, I guess, and it took several long moments (or so it felt) for me to swim to him. I got his head above water while my husband righted the boat and got himself and our son back into it, and all the way back to shore, he was as still as a stone. He knew what he did!
