Let's say that you ask someone out for a Friday or Sat night and you get a response of "Maybe. Depends on work.". But the person doesn't work nights nor do they do any on-call sort of job. But the person does take work home and does extra work at home. But who would do such a thing on a Friday or Sat night?
How would you take that?
I would take it as the person is blowing me off and I wouldn't bother to ask any more.

I would take it in the similar way. He/she is keeping you as a second option if the first one doesn't work out.
The ball is in his court and he's enjoying that. If he passes the ball back to you then go with it. His answer doesn't mean anything, but i'd respect that it's his turn to make a move.
If the person was really interested, the work would be put on the back burner for one night.
