Is going for an ice cream cone an idea for a good first date?
Yes, although it should be about more than just the ice cream. A stroll along a scenic route while enjoying ice cream is an idea. However if you or your date is lactose intolerant , be sure to bring along some Lactaid (lactase pill), otherwise the intolerant one could be in agony. In fact I once did this kind of date and didn't have Lactaid with me - the result was bloating, pain and later on diarrhea. I felt the symptoms soon after licking the cone.
An afternoon of canoeing, followed by a trip to the ice cream shop and maybe a stroll someplace.
Canoeing on a date? I guess we all have a different POV about dating. To me, it's getting dressed up pretty and having a fun, relaxing evening. I sure don't want anyone on a FIRST DATE with me to see me looking like something the cat dragged in.

LOL, especially if he makes YOU row. All sweaty, and huffing and puffing.
EDIT: We have gondola rides around here, in the Naples area, but the gondoliers do all the work. They might even sing for you. That would be a great date, but probably a little too much for the first one. And not cheap.
Love it myself. Last girl I took to a driving range, couldn't hit the ball. I Couldn't stop laughing, but was trying not to laugh too much, good thing was she saw the funny part of it too (well some of the time, but didn't find it as funny as me).
Another good one is ten pin bowling, or bowling as called in the US.
Speaking of hitting balls, how about mini golf? If you're any good at it, you can help your date hold the putter, this way you can test their comfort with you being a little touchy feely (keep it decent though if it's a first date). The courses are nicely designed with water features, who knows, she might even get wet.
I'm very active and I LOVE when guys take me out to do something active like canoeing or hiking.
